Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Kenya Established in the early 1930’s, Giraffe Manor offers a unique experience with giraffes . This manor is housed in a sanctuary for endangered Rothschild giraffes and is located in Karen- a leafy suburb on the outskirts of Nairobi.
Room rates at the Manor start from US$ 875 per adult sharing per night and US$ 605 per child sharing per night.
When Giraffe Manor was purchased in 1974 by Jock and Betty Leslie-Melville, they began a campaign to save the highly endangered Rothschild’s giraffe . The legacy of their efforts lives on today, through the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife (AFEW), which was founded by the Leslie-Melvilles in 1979.
Giraffe Manor is for residents only; non-residents are not allowed to take meals there. Other choices for lunch in Karen are: Dormans, at Karen Crossroads – coffee outlet similar to Starbucks that serves light lunches (i.e. sandwiches & rolls).
Humans and giraffes have a different type of relationship than that of many other animals. Giraffes have never served a significant purpose for people, yet they haven’t been seen as a threat either. They love the gentleness as well as the fact that they are so different from other animals out there.
An American trophy hunter has kicked off another social media furore after defending a recent giraffe kill in South Africa by claiming they were “very dangerous animals”. In one sense she is right – giraffes are big and strong and you certainly wouldn’t want one kicking you. But attacks on humans are very rare.
What I am saying is that, for a big ticket item, the cost of Giraffe Manor is absolutely worth it . If you’re going to splurge here and there during your travels, this is one time I’d wholeheartedly say, “Go for it .”
Due to the property’s popularity and generally full occupancy, travelers who are not staying at Giraffe Manor cannot just turn up for the breakfasts or afternoon teas. However, the Giraffe Centre is open to the public daily, and guests can stroke and feed the giraffes from raised platforms.
Purchasing a giraffe is no small endeavor either even if you do have the money required, which range on average from $40,000-$80,000 that would be required to acquire a healthy, giraffe .
Kruger National Park, South Africa The Kruger National Park is an obvious choice, having a large population of common species, with game sightings prolific and a suitable giraffe habitat. The Pilansberg National Park near Sun City is more convenient, but requires more patience.
Giraffe Manor is in the leafy Nairobi suburb of Karen and Langata. As the crow flies, it is not far from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport but Nairobi traffic can be unpredictable, so it usually takes approximately 45 – 60 minutes the manor .
Three hearts , to be exact. There is a systemic (main) heart . Two lesser hearts pump blood to the gills where waste is discarded and oxygen is received. They work like the right side of the human heart .
Though many Kenyans choose to dress conservatively with men wearing shirts with long sleeves, while women wear trousers or skirts which cover the knee. In more tourist areas, however, everyday wear can be kept more casual. Due to the heat and humidity, it’s best to wear light, cotton clothing .
