How to Build a Breakfast Shelf Find the studs in your wall using a stud finder and mark lines 42 inches up from the floor. Use your level to make sure they’re even. Screw your shelf brackets or corbels to the wall at those marks. Lay the bar top, centering it over the brackets, and screw in place.
While there any many improvements that can be undertaken in the kitchen — from custom kitchen cabinets to modernized fixtures, to tiled backsplash — the inclusion of a kitchen island can create much more value for your family than simply adding storage and prep space.
A good waterfall countertop is going to cost you. You’ll of course spend more on materials for a waterfall countertop island . But you’ll also pay as much as $2,000 for the CNC fabrication process.
Solid Surface countertops can overhang 6 inches without additional support (e.g. plywood decking). 3 cm Quartz (engineered stone) can handle a 14 inch overhangs and 3 cm Granite overhangs should not exceed a 10 inch overhang without additional support.
The bar top overhang should be a minimum of 8-1/2” and could be as much as 10” so your knees do not hit the bar front. For our extra tall customers the 10” overhang maybe necessary.

Slide a stud finder over the wall to locate the wall studs. Measure from the floor to the height you want the top of your countertop to sit. Place a 2-inch-by-4-inch-by-6-foot wood board on the lower line you marked on the wall. Attach three 1-inch-by-4-inch wood boards to the wall brace board to hold the countertop .
In this case, rather than widening the island to allow for stools around the edges, the island can be extended a long way in one direction (50 to 80 inches), creating a dining-table-length extension adjacent to the main work surface.
