While Tybee’s beaches are again accessible to the public after being closed as a measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19, several restrictions regarding social distancing and prohibited items remain in place. As of May 1, the beaches on Tybee Island are open with restrictions noted below.
TYBEE ISLAND , Ga. (WTOC) – Tybee Island city council approved a smoking ban on the beach on Thursday evening. The ban will be a one year trial and takes effect on May 1, 2020. If caught smoking , you could face up to a $1,000 fine.
The Tybee Island littering ordinance is very strict. Litter must be contained at all times. TENTS : Don’t leave items, like tents , umbrellas, and chairs, on the beach from 9pm to 7am. These create an obstacle to the sea turtles that come onto the beach overnight to nest.
OVERNIGHT SLEEPING / CAMPING – No person may camp or sleep on the streets, beaches , parks, parking lots or other public areas, whether in automobiles, trucks, campers, recreational vehicles or other vehicle, or in equipment designed and intended for the purpose of camping.
But while Tybee beach is a pretty good bet to avoid gators, that doesn’t hold for all area beaches, Crawford said. Little Tybee , Wassaw and Ossabaw islands are all protected island with no development. It’s not unusual to see a gator or signs of one on their beaches.
