The observation deck in the Empire State Building is slightly higher than the Top of the Rock one at 1,050 feet above ground. The building is located further south in Manhattan, so offers better views of the cluster of skyscrapers near the water in the financial district.

Re: Empire State Building worth the cost? I think ESB is well worth a visit. The lobby and interior are beautiful, and there is an interesting exhibit about the construction process and the history of the building . The views are tremendous on a clear day, and the gift shop is pretty good (ie not TOO tacky).
